There was much at stake at this game beyond the play on the field, as the Football Association of Singapore was also hoping to get more fans to come and support local football.

With average attendance dropping to just above a thousand last year, more than 2,500 showed up for the opening match.

And they were not disappointed, with SAF delivering the goals.

The first coming in the 24th minute from Fazrul Nawaz and the Warriors sealed the match when their new import, Mislav Karoglan, made it two after the break in the 68th minute, securing the three points for SAF FC.

Ian Mullane, CEO of marketing company Vanda Sports, said: "... I think it was a good start, I think (the 5.00pm kick-off) is working, and now that two and a half thousand people are leaving the stadium, they still have the evening ahead of them."
