"Supersub" Steven to coach Stags?

SINGAPORE: Former Singapore international Steven Tan is set to take the hot seat at Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League side Tampines Rovers.

Channel NewsAsia has learnt that the 40 year old has been earmarked to become the Stags' head coach for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to kick-off in the first week of February.

Tan confirmed the development but clarified that the appointment has yet to be confirmed as the club are still finalising details.

"I would definitely be very thrilled (if I was given the opportunity)," said Tan, who holds an Asian Football Confederation 'A' coaching licence.

Tan turned out for the club in the S-League between 2004 and 2005 before becoming head coach of its Prime League side from 2006 until last year.

The diminutive right winger also represented Singapore in a decade-long international career from 1992 to 2001, scoring 12 goals in 50 appearances.

He was fondly dubbed "Supersub" by the Kallang crowd during the Malaysia Cup era for his burst of speed, and was part of the League and Cup winning Singapore team of 1994 that included David Lee, Lim Tong Hai, Malek Awab, Fandi Ahmad and Abbas Saad.

The development at the club is part of Tampines' re-structuring process, which is likely to see current head coach Vorawan Chitavanich, who led the Stags to S-League triumphs in 2004 and 2005, move up as its director of coaching.

Moving on from the club is Syed Faruk, who confirmed that he will step down as team manager, but will continue to contribute to the Stags as a member of the club's committee.

Succeeding Faruk as team manager will be former Singapore international Zulkarnaen Zainal, who will also be assistant to the Stags' incoming Prime League head coach Narong Saiket.

The 37-year-old Zulkarnaen joined Tampines in 2004, tasted S-League success with the club in 2004 and 2005 before deciding to hang up his boots at the end of last season.
