Public Tip-Off Leads To Arrest Of ‘Fishing’ Housebreaker

On 20 January 2011 at about 2.00 am , a vigilant resident living in the vicinity of Serangoon Avenue 3 informed the Police that there was a man behaving suspiciously at the common corridor opposite his block and provided the Police with a detailed description of the man.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded promptly and conducted a search of the said block. A man fitting the description was spotted standing outside a unit with its window ajar and the officers approached him to conduct a check. Three bamboo sticks, a digital photo frame, several dummy handphones, and a plastic bag were found in his possession. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had used the bamboo sticks to 'fish' out the digital photo frame and dummy handphones from the said unit which window had been left open.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 21 January 2011 for the offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 14 years.
