The court heard that the couple were near Raffles Place MRT Station on Nov 21 when Ms Nur Faizah, 19, refused to follow Saifullizan into a passageway.
He kicked and punched her repeatedly, pulled her by the collar of her blouse and banged her head on the wall. He then threw her on the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched her in the stomach.
The court heard that Saifullizan also put his foot on the victim’s head and rained blows on her back and stomach. He even sat on her stomach and tried to strangle her, but she turned her body and he fell off. He then punched her on the stomach and ribcage.
The couple made their way to Hotel 81 Star in Geylang at around 2am. There, Saifullizan continued with his assaults, using his leg and fist. For no apparent reason, he threw a stool at the victim. Next, he kicked and punched her repeatedly, grabbed hold of her hair and used a lighter to burn it. Two days later, Ms Nur Faizah sought treatment in hospital and was found to have multiple bruises all over her body and five broken ribs.
Saifullizan had first assaulted her two months earlier, at the void deck of Block 620 Bukit Batok Central, Deputy Superintendent Raj Kishore Rai told the court. Unhappy that Ms Nur Faizah had received a text message from a male friend, he grabbed hold of her by the neck and choked her before punching her in the stomach. He then dragged her by the hair and collar for about 3m before she broke free.
Saifullizan also stole a Korean woman’s $528 mobile phone while working at a shop in Resorts World Sentosa, the court heard.
He could have been jailed for up to 10 years for causing grievous hurt, and for up to seven years for burning her hair.
In 2005, he was placed on record for being a member of an unlawful society. He was convicted of theft in 2007.
