Between December 2010 and January 2011, 5 robberies at convenience stores in Tampines and Pasir Ris were reported to have been committed by a male suspect wearing a motorcycle helmet with a knife. All in all, the robbery suspect was believed to have made away with an assortment of cigarettes, top-up phone cards, handphones and cash amounting to about $3,000/-.
Following the reports, officers from Bedok Police Division conducted extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations to establish the identity of the robbery suspect. The officers’ efforts paid off when the robbery suspect was arrested at Bedok South in the early hours of 5 January 2011 in an operation within 24 hours of the latest robbery. Items such as handphones, cashcards and parking coupons believed to have been stolen were recovered from the suspect’s possession. A motorcycle helmet and knife believed to have been used in the commission of the robberies were also seized.
Through follow-up investigations, a 39 year-old secondhand handphone dealer who bought one of the stolen handphones from the robbery suspect, despite having reason to believe that the said handphone was stolen, was also arrested along Upper Weld Road on the same day.
The 38 year-old robbery suspect will be charged in Court 26 on 6 January 2011 for Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which carries imprisonment of not less than 5 years and not more than 20 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 12 strokes.
Investigations are on-going against the secondhand handphone dealer who faces a charge of Dishonestly Receiving Stolen Property under Section 411 of the Penal Code Chapter 224. The said offence carries a maximum imprisonment terms of 5 years, and/or with fine.
