In Serangoon North, man attempts to jump in bid to escape police

SINGAPORE - A Japanese landlord who had quarrelled with his Chinese tenant over rent issues climbed out of a window and tried to jump in a bid to escape from the police.

Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily reported that the 49-year-old Japanese man had started a furious argument with his 23-year-old Chinese tenant over her rent.

The incident occured yesterday at Block 509, Serangoon North Avenue 4 at approximately 4.05pm in the afternoon.

Shin Min Daily also reported that the Japanese man had barricaded himself inside the flat when the police arrived at the scene.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force then mobilised personnel to the scene after the man threatened to jump. The rescuers used nets and inflatable mats in preparation for the rescue.

Agitated

The suspect appeared to be agitated after police broke into the flat and shouted "No" before jumping up onto the window sill.

He then used his hands to remove the safety nets and appeared to be on the verge of jumping. However, a civil defence officer pulled him to safety.

A police spokesperson later said in an interview that a 49-year-old man had been arrested for attempted suicide and that investigations were ongoing.

Head injuries

Medical personnel were seen tending to two young women along the corridor after the suspect had been taken away.

One woman appeared to have suffered injuries to her head but refused to be sent to the hospital. She is believed to be the tenant.

She refused to be interviewed and said that the entire incident was merely a misunderstanding.

Neighbours said that there was also another two other tenants staying in the flat, one of whom was a Chinese woman while the other was a Filipino man.
