BUTTERWORTH: Azzahida Othman, 35, had left her Taman Bertam Putra house at about 8.30am on Friday when the incident occurred.
She was driving with her six-year-old son, Ikhmal Fahat Norhisyam, to register him for pre-school.
The thief and his accomplice, who were on a motorcycle, had approached Azzahida to ask her for directions but she ignored them.
She said the pillion rider then got down and smashed her front passenger's side window.
"I put up a struggle when he took my handbag, but I gave up as he was holding an object which looked like a knife," she told reporters at her house.
But once the thieves rode off, she gave chase in her car with fellow residents, armed with hockey sticks and golf clubs, in pursuit. The neighbours were alerted by Azzahida's incessant honking.
The short chase ended when the two suspects fell after losing control of their motorcycle.
The residents who caught up with them subdued them and beat up one of them.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Zulkifli Alias said those making citizen's arrests should hand over the suspects to the police immediately after they had been subdued.
"The public must not take the law into their hands but must allow the police to investigate and charge the suspects in court. This is the appropriate action," he said.
