Looters smash treasures, mummies in Egyptian Museum
CAIRO - LOOTERS broke into the Cairo museum housing the world's greatest collection of Pharaonic treasures, smashing several statues and ripped the heads off of two mummies, while police battled anti-government protesters on the streets.

More than 100 people have been killed during anti-government protests that have swept Egypt, according to a Reuters tally of reports from medical sources, hospitals and witnesses. The real figure may be very different, given the confusion on the streets.

Saying the country is on the brink of the most important change in their lifetimes, they sang and carried signs. One placard riffed on a popular American song, "Walk Like an Egyptian," and showed a lone Cairo protester standing in front of a phalanx of police.
Vigilantes formed to deter looters
With city centers largely free of any police or military presence, looters, some sporting swords and riding motorcycles, had infiltrated numerous public and private buildings.
An increasing number of residents, had worked together to set up barricades around some streets handing out clubs, kitchen knives and whatever other implements they could find to trustworthy men and teenagers who could help ward off looters.
