Germany 4-0 Australia

It took Germany just eight minutes to make their mark on the tournament with a goal created by their rising young midfield playmaker Ozil from Werder Bremen.

After turning his marker superbly, Ozil split the Australia defence by threading the ball through to Muller.

With the Aussie defence caught flat-footed and hoping for an offside decision, Muller steered the ball back across the penalty area, where Lukas Podolski was waiting to apply a thunderous finish to a shot Mark Schwarzer could only help into the net.

Klose headed in their 2nd goal of the game later on, blah blah blah, Everton midfielder Cahill was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute for a lunge at Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger which replays strongly suggests he was a victim of over-zealous refereeing by Mexican Marco Rodriguez.

With Cahill set to serve a two-match ban and Australia looking unlikely to progress to the knockout stage without their best player, the 30-year-old’s World Cup looks over. With the 10-man Aussies stretched, Thomas Muller made it 3-0 in the 68th minute, while Mesut Ozil fed sub Cacau, who made it 4-0.
