Five-time champions Brazil had to wait to the 55nd minute to finally breach the North Korean defence before finally prevailing 2-1 in a Group G match at Johannesburg.
Defender Maicon lashed the ball in at the near post 10 minutes into the second half to finally break down the resilient North Korean defence before Elano added a second with 18 minutes left.
A late goal from Ji yun-nam gave the North Korean's a moment of extraordinary joy but it was to little to late as Brazil held on.
