Two separate Circle Line commuters reported smoke in their cabin, after train services were delayed earlier on Tuesday morning (Dec 23) due to a power fault.

Investigations into the incident are being conducted, train operator SMRT said.

SMRT said in a statement that at 9.05am, a train travelling between Holland Village towards Buona Vista had stalled, causing a power trip between Holland Village and Harbourfront in both directions.

At about 9.17am, SMRT Singapore tweeted that commuters travelling between Serangoon and Buona Vista towards Harbour Front should expect an additional 10 mins travelling time.

"The power was progressively restored and completed at 9.23am," they said. Train services towards Harbourfont then resumed at 9.27am. Train operations reached normal operation at 10.02am, tweeted SMRT.

Some commuters tweeted Channel NewsAsia to report that there was smoke in the cabin in the train stuck at Buona Vista, with Twitter user @farouky saying that he could not breathe. He added that he did not hear any announcements on the situation even after 10 minutes.

Another witness, Dino, told Channel NewsAsia that he saw a "big burst of orange sparks" through the cabin window and a "loud explosion" right after. He said the cabin "shook from the impact" and the train slowed down and came to a halt.

"The lights in the cabin dimmed and the air-con stopped," he said, adding that they came back on within 10 minutes.
