Asian football’s governing body, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), has expressed serious concerns over the safety and security of teams, media and fans during the 2015 Asian Cup, following the events that unfolded during the hostage-taking incident in Sydney on Monday (Dec 15).

Asia’s flagship competition will be held in Australia across five venues in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne from Jan 9-31, 2015.

AFC General Secretary Alex Soosay said while the ALOC has been working hard in preparation for the competition, the well-being of stakeholders cannot be compromised.

“Australia has successfully hosted many prestigious events in the past, but the recent developments in Sydney cannot be taken lightly,” he said.

He added: “I would like to assure the teams, fans and the media that the ALOC will do whatever necessary to provide the best security cover around the competition and everyone will enjoy the best-ever AFC Asian Cup.”

The tournament kicks off in Melbourne on Jan 9, when Australia take on Kuwait, with the final set for Jan 31 in Sydney.
