A 660-metre stretch of Orchard Road will be closed to all vehicles on Saturday evening (Oct 4) for the first edition of Pedestrian Night, welcoming Singapore’s first Pedestrian Night in more than 20 years.
The stretch will be between Scotts Road and Bideford Road, but carparks of nearby shopping malls will still be accessible. During the closure, motorists travelling towards the city centre will be able to use Grange Road.
The stretch of Orchard Road will be turned into a tennis court during the inaugural edition of Pedestrian Night for members of the public to try their hand at the sport. There will also be performances taking place in the middle section of this road.
The Singapore Retailers Association has also advised retailers along Orchard Road to extend their opening hours, since Pedestrian Night ends at 11pm.
Taking the lead is Jay Gee Enterprises, which manages brands like Levi's and Nike in Singapore. And if business is good, they may extend the opening hours for its other stores along Orchard Road, outside of the closed stretch.
