Four male suspects were arrested for setting off an improvised explosive device constructed from sparklers.

The oldest suspect to be charged in court on Tuesday (Oct 13).

The four suspects - aged 12 to 18 - were arrested on Jul 30 this year, after police received a call for assistance.

Upon arrival at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, police spotted a few bundled sparklers and conducted their checks.

The 18-year-old will be charged with Public Nuisance with Common Intention. The offence is punishable with a fine of up to S$1,000, the police stated in its press release, adding that investigations against the other three male suspects are still ongoing.

Since July 2014, there have been a total of 17 cases where 72 persons were arrested for setting off improvised explosive devices constructed from sparklers, the police stated.

"Police would like to remind the public that we take a serious view of these offences. Such improvised explosive devices are a potential fire hazard... The resulting blast effect and fire from the explosion also endanger lives and cause damage to property," it said.
