Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero scored late goals as Manchester City battled to beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.
The champions were at risk of losing further ground in the Barclays Premier League title race ahead of leaders Chelsea hosting Arsenal on Sunday.
But Toure, who has struggled to replicate his form of last season when he scored 20 league goals, broke the deadlock after 82 minutes.
Aguero, who like Aleksandar Kolarov had hit a post earlier in the contest, rifled home a second to make the points safe and reduce the gap on Chelsea at the top to two points.

Radamel Falcao's first Manchester United goal secured a crucial 2-1 Barclays Premier League win over Everton but it was the performance of David De Gea that stole the show at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Spaniard became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty from Leighton Baines in the Barclays Premier League then produced two stunning saves as Everton threatened to snatch a late equaliser.
Angel Di Maria had put the hosts ahead with his third goal in five matches before De Gea dived low to his right to keep out Baines' penalty on the stroke of half-time.
But, after Steven Naismith had levelled, Falcao, who is on a season-long loan from Monaco with a view to a permanent deal, popped up with a timely first goal for the club in the 62nd minute, before De Gea denied Everton a point gave United successive victories for the first time under Louis van Gaal.
The result was a huge boost to United ahead of a two-week international break, during which Van Gaal will hope some of his injured players, including Luke Shaw following his 70th-minute withdrawal, will regain full fitness.
Defeat for Everton, meanwhile, extends the Merseyside club's winless streak to five matches in all competitions. The win lifted United to fifth, while Everton are 17th ahead of other matches on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino got the better of his former club as Tottenham Hotspur beat Southampton 1-0 for their first win in five Barclays Premier League matches thanks to a goal from Christian Eriksen.
After back-to-back victories in their opening two fixtures, Spurs had struggled to maintain their fine start. In contrast, Southampton had found themselves among the English top flight's leading pack in the early part of the season under new manager Ronald Koeman.
Eriksen beat visiting goalkeeper Fraser Forster with a low strike into the bottom left-hand corner five minutes before the break, the goal ultimately proving enough to end Southampton's seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Chelsea maintained their impressive start to the Barclays Premier League season with a 2-0 over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Eden Hazard's first-half penalty and Diego Costa's ninth goal of the season sent Chelsea five points clear of their nearest rivals Manchester City at the top of the table.
The defeat ended Arsenal's unbeaten start to the Barclays Premier League campaign, as Arsene Wenger's men fell nine points behind their London neighbours after seven matches.
The only downside for the home faithful was an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was forced off after suffering a blow to the head in an early collision with Alexis Sanchez.

Diafra Sakho was on target again as West Ham United secured a second straight Barclays Premier League home win by beating Queens Park Rangers 2-0 at the Boleyn Ground.
Sam Allardyce's side may not have impressed as during their 3-1 triumph against Liverpool in their last match in front of their fans but always looked likely winners on Sunday after Nedum Onuoha's early own goal.
Sakho scored the second after 59 minutes to put the game beyond doubt, maintaining his record of having netted every time he has started in a West Ham shirt with his fifth goal in as many matches.
The West Ham manager will also be happy his team kept a first clean sheet of the season, while QPR have lost all four Barclays Premier League matches on the road since gaining promotion and sit at the bottom of the table with four points.
