ComfortDelGro is testing a new smart camera that can determine real-time traffic risks while a vehicle is in motion and provide the driver with audio and visual warnings.

For example, it can detect whether the taxi is travelling too close to a car or a pedestrian and will produce a beep sound and display an icon of a car or pedestrian on its dscreen to warn the driver of the impending danger.

Called the Mobileye, the 38° wide-angle smart camera, which retails for S$2,300, will be installed at no charge on the front windshield of 30 taxis and tested for the next six months.

The Mobileye will also be installed in 30 SBS Transit buses, also for a six-month trial, starting next month.

Other dangers the device can detect include whether a vehicle is veering out of its lane and whether a driver is in danger of exceeding the speed limit. It does so by detecting lane markings on the roads, as well as various signs indicating speed limits.

If the trial is successful, Mobileye will run side by side with the first generation of in-vehicle cameras in ComfortDelGro’s fleet. Installation of the in-vehicle cameras, which have passed the trials, began last December.
