Many incentives are behind the relocation of General Motors' regional headquarters to Singapore from China, but the most attractive are likely to be the tax breaks and better opportunities to hire expatriate staff.

General Motors International (GMI) officially opened here yesterday, leaving the Shanghai office in charge of China operations.

GMI will oversee markets in the region such as Japan and Indochina. With the Chinese market growing too large and requiring a special team to handle that country alone, job functions related to improving GM's visibility and its products and sales outside China had to be segregated.

The decision to move to Singapore is also likely to have arisen out of a desire to step out of the Chinese juggernaut's shadow.
