They blamed him for the arrest of one of their compatriots by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), and so hatched a plan to seek revenge.

This led to the death of Bangladeshi national Syed Mahbubul Islam, 44, whom they had beaten so hard with wooden sticks that several broke.

The State Courts yesterday heard that the men — aged between 24 and 30 — had been angered by Mahbubul, who had allegedly also threatened them with arrest and repatriation by the ICA.

The group— Jasin @ Josim, Razif @ Md Rajib Hussain, Ashraf @ Ashraf Hossen, Suruj @ Md Suruj and Saidur Rahman — decided to take their revenge when Mahbubul told them he would visit them on Jan 20 last year at their makeshift huts in a forested area along Bukit Batok Road.

At about 10.40am that day, Mahbubul met Jasin at Bukit Batok MRT Station and followed him to where the men lived after buying some food and drinks. They began attacking the victim with wooden sticks — which one of them had prepared earlier by cutting tree branches — from the moment he arrived at the huts.

By the end of the assault, which continued for a few hours, Mahbubul was lying on the ground with blood all over his face, and the flesh on his shin had opened up, with blood oozing out. He begged the men to take him to the main road and promised not to identify them.

The group proceeded to clean him up and carried the victim out of the forested area, where he was found by a passer-by at about 3.15pm. He later died in a hospital.

For voluntarily causing grievous hurt to their victim, as well as for staying illegally in Singapore, the five men — all Bangladeshi nationals — were sentenced to a total of six years and nine months in jail and 10 strokes of the cane.

The maximum penalty for voluntarily causing grievous hurt is a jail sentence of up to 10 years and/or a fine or caning.
