Traffic near the Woodlands Checkpoint slowed to a crawl for most of the day yesterday, after the expected heavy vehicular flow between Singapore and Malaysia at the start of the Hari Raya Puasa weekend was made worse by an “intermittent slowdown” — lasting 45 minutes — of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) system in the morning.

And despite the ICA deploying more resources at the checkpoint, the congestion continued into the evening. When TODAY visited the Causeway at about 6.15pm, the jam stretched almost 2km from the Causeway, all the way back to the Woodlands Avenue 3 exit of the Bukit Timah Expressway.

In response to TODAY’s queries, the ICA said all its lanes were operational and some lanes were converted to “clear other modes of vehicles, instead of cars”. “The ICA is monitoring our systems and traffic situation closely. We will deploy our resources accordingly,” it added.

The authority said it experienced the slowdown of its system between 10am and 10.45am. “As the slowdown coincided with the peak period, there was crowd build-up at the Woodlands Checkpoint. More resources were immediately deployed at the Woodlands Checkpoint,” it said.

The authority said it regrets the inconvenience caused to travellers.

It had added that traffic volume was expected to build up from Friday and the situation would continue until Monday. “Travellers using the land checkpoints during these periods can expect delays,” it said.

Yesterday, the ICA reiterated its advice for motorists to check the traffic situation at the land checkpoints before setting off on their journey. They can do so by calling the traffic information hotline 6863 0117, listening to TrafficWatch on the radio, or visiting the Land Transport Authority’s One Motoring website, the ICA added.
