Taxi drivers are not allowed to refuse to convey passengers without valid reasons ("Penalise picky taxi drivers" by Mr Chew Chee Weng; Sunday).
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) views all complaints against errant taxi drivers seriously and will not hesitate to take stern action against them.
Taxi drivers found liable of such an offence will be penalised with a composition sum of $300 and six demerit points under the Vocational Licence Points System.
A taxi driver's vocational licence can be suspended for periods ranging from two to eight weeks for accumulating six or more demerit points. The licence will be revoked if he accumulates 21 or more demerit points within 24 months.
Passengers who encounter such errant drivers can report the matter to the LTA on 1800-CALL-LTA (1800-225-5582), with details of the taxi's registration number, date, time and a brief account of the incident to facilitate investigations.
