The alleged hacker operating under the Messiah pseudonym has been denied bail, which means he will likely be remanded by the authorities until all five charges pressed against him have been dealt with.

Yesterday, James Raj Arokiasamy’s lawyer M Ravi suggested bail be set at S$40,000 upwards and for additional conditions to be imposed — such as confiscating his passport or ordering him to report to the authorities periodically.

But Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Wong Woon Kwong opposed to the 35-year-old being let out on bail and argued that he could still flee the country illegally even if he had to turn in his passport.

Agreeing with the prosecution, District Judge Soh Tze Bian took into account that James Raj absconded in 2011, while he was under investigations for drug offences, and that he is accused of reoffending while he was on the run.

James Raj is facing one charge under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act for allegedly hacking into the Ang Mo Kio Town Council’s website from a Kuala Lumpur apartment on Oct 28 as well as four other drug consumption charges.

James Raj will return to court for a pre-trial conference on Jan 7.
