Taxi fares have been deregulated since 1998, but companies are required to publicise fare revisions at least one week in advance in the media and on their websites.
Currently, different taxis charge different fares depending on cost factors like vehicle models and rental rates.
The government has acknowledged that the present taxi fare structure is complex and confusing for commuters.
It is looking into simplifying fare structures for taxis in Singapore, said Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo during question time in Parliament on Tuesday.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will work with the Public Transport Council and taxi firms to study if and how fares could be made simpler and more easily comparable across different companies.
The study will consider the impact on taxi drivers, with the aim of having a fare structure that best serves commuters' interests.
Authorities are also not ruling out having a centralised cab booking system.
