Kazakh man arrested for using toy gun to commit robbery

A Kazakhstan national who allegedly used a toy gun to commit robbery has been charged in court.

21-year-old Varichenko Kirill is accused of tucking a toy gun into his pants and robbing Ms Maeta Yuka who was walking along Claymore Hill at 2.55am on Monday.

He is said to have approached the victim for a cigarette and when she passed it to him, he lifted his shirt to show her the gun.

The accused then fled after getting the victim's wallet, among other things.

He was arrested on Wednesday.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of between three and 14 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
