Police have recorded 74 cases of people being gunned down in the first seven months of this year, Malaysia's Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today (Oct 23).

He said majority of the killings involving firearms took place in Selangor with 15 cases, following by Perak (10), Penang (9), Sabah and Johor (7 each) and Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Sarawak (5 each).

He said firearms used to commit crimes were believed to be smuggled in from neighbouring countries.

To counter such activities, Mr Ahmad Zahid said the police and other enforcement agencies such as the Customs Department, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Anti Smuggling Unit conduct random raids and enforcement.

It also works together with other agencies to share information and conduct joint operations.
