An outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea affected some 300 National Service recruits on basic military training in Pulau Tekong over the past week.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said investigations showed that the outbreak was caused by the Norovirus — the most common cause of gastric inflammation. The virus is spread through contaminated food, water or surfaces, through vomit, in the air and by person-to-person contact.

MINDEF said it tested its cookhouse premises and food handlers at the Basic Military Training centre, which houses all its recruits in Pulau Tekong, and found they were not the source of the viral infection. Food and water served there was also tested and yielded negative results for the virus.

However, common areas at the centre have been cleaned and disinfected, and training within swimming pools has been stalled temporarily, said MINDEF.

Most of the affected soldiers recovered after one or two days, it added.
