Scores of SWAT team members, some wearing flak jackets and carrying machine guns, have surrounded a San Antonio Motel 8 in a tense standoff with a man suspected of shooting a police officer in the head, law enforcement officials said.
The alleged gunman, who is believed to be in his 30s, is believed to have at least one firearm, said Sandy Gutierrez, San Antonio police spokeswoman.
Officer Aaron Terrazas, an eight-year veteran of the force, was responding to a disturbance call just before 8 o'clock this morning. When the officer arrived at the room, the suspect shot him through the door, police said.
Police described the officer's injury as "nonlife threatening," and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
The motel, along with two local schools, was evacuated. Several roads, including parts of Highway I-35, have been closed off to traffic.
