A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a spate of housebreaking cases in Tampines.

In a statement to the media, police said they had been receiving reports of break-ins in the area since May. Cash, jewellery and other valuables worth about $10,000 were reported missing.

In most of the cases, the suspect had gained access into the units through the common corridor windows while the occupants were away during the day.

Following extensive enquiries on the ground, police managed to establish the identity of the suspect and had him arrested on Tuesday in the vicinity of Simei.

If convicted, he faces a maximum jail term of 10 years and shall also be liable for caning.

The police advise the public to keep their doors, windows and other openings properly secured with good quality grills and close-shackled padlocks.

Residents should also refrain from keeping large amount of cash and valuables in their premises.
