Hundreds of illegal set-top boxes at a storage facility in Singapore were seized during a police raid earlier this week.
A statement by cable TV operator StarHub said it has has been tracking a syndicate that was distributing sales flyers for the sale of illegal set-top boxes that claim to be able to unscramble StarHub TV content since early 2013.
After months of investigation, the importer of these boxes was identified and StarHub will follow up with criminal prosecution against the illegal importer.
StarHub reminded the public it is a criminal offence to sell, import or manufacture illegal set-top boxes. It is also against the law for consumers to tap into StarHub's network using illegal boxes, with the intention to intercept and receive the content signals without authorisation.
The cable TV operator added that it is currently migrating pay TV customers to a new encryption standard that cannot be unscrambled by existing illegal boxes.
SingTel has been urging its rival StarHub to upgrade to a more secure system to prevent unauthorised access by non-subscribers, reported local media earlier this month.
Pirated set-top boxes, which usually go for between S$150-$200, can be found in several shopping centres and have even been advertised through letterbox flyers in recent months.
