By Erwin Paul Armstrong:
There have been several letters on the subject of drivers and driving habits in Singapore.
I have been living and driving here for more than 50 years and am very concerned by the increase in road accidents in recent years.
Much of this can be attributed to the influx of foreign drivers, and I wonder if they are required to take any driving test here. If not, maybe this should be a requirement.
In recent years, sightings of Traffic Police officers on patrol have become increasingly rare. It is the lack of enforcement that encourages people to drive recklessly.
Reckless drivers should be banned from driving for a lengthy period, or even for life.
And why is it that so many motorists here do not signal before making a turn or changing lanes? It is very frustrating for drivers waiting at a minor road for oncoming vehicles to pass, only for them to turn into the minor road without signalling.
I hope to see a considerable improvement in driving standards here for the benefit of all road users.
