A murder suspect who was killed during a shootout with police on Wednesday had used a shotgun in an effort to ambush members of a police task force trying to arrest him, officials said.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said the man who was fatally shot, Henry Kiner, 27, fired twice toward task force members from the second floor of an Oakland Park hotel.
The task force had been focused on a car below, not knowing the accused killer was taking aim at them above.
Six BSO deputies and one Fort Lauderdale Police officer shot at Kiner during the incident that played out shortly after midnight at the Days Inn, 1595 W. Oakland Park Boulevard.
A deputy was hurt during the incident, while a hotel guest was shot in the arm.
The deputy wasn't shot, but suffered an arm injury while drying to duck out of the way and was treated and released from an area hospital, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police Detective DeAnna Greenlaw, Kiner was responsible for the Aug. 11 shooting death of a Deerfield Beach man, Corey Pratter. He was pronounced dead at the scene where he was shot.
