PREMIER LEAGUE SCORES
New Everton boss Roberto Martinez had to settle for a point from his first competitive game in charge as the Toffees drew 2-2 with Norwich at Carrow Road.

After a goalless first half, Steven Whittaker put Norwich in front in the 51st minute but teenager Ross Barkley drilled in his first goal for Everton 10 minutes later and in the 65th minute the visitors took the lead through Seamus Coleman.

Their lead lasted only six minutes, though, as Ricky van Wolfswinkel grabbed a debut goal for Norwich.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce was thrilled by Stewart Downing's debut in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Cardiff City at Upton Park. Downing celebrated his £5million move from Liverpool with a lively 20-minute cameo as goals from Joe Cole and Kevin Nolan gave the Hammers a comfortable start to the season.

England hero Rickie Lambert's great week continued as he netted a 90th-minute penalty to give Southampton a 1-0 victory over West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Southampton thought they had taken the lead on the half-hour mark when Lambert's header across goal was cushioned home by Adam Lallana, but the midfielder was adjudged, perhaps harshly, to be offside.

In the final minute, Southampton were gifted the winner when Luke Shaw was brought down by Youssouf Mulumbu and Lambert stepped up to convert the penalty.

It was the same score at the Stadium of Light where Patjim Kasami's first goal for Fulham earned the Cottagers a 1-0 victory over Sunderland.

Di Canio was clearly frustrated by his side's inability to make the most of their chances with new boys Cabral and Ondrej Celustka among those who came close in a dominant opening period. Di Canio said: "We weren't really ferocious. We have to be nasty in terms of our football.

"I don't want to say we had a clear identity but a big part of the puzzle is clear. I think we did well but it's obvious we can do much better."

United wins Premier League opener
Two goals each from Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck saw Manchester United win 4-1 against Swansea in David Moyes' first Premier League game in charge of the defending champion.

Wayne Rooney, who has reportedly told the club he wants to leave Old Trafford, came off the bench for the last 30 minutes of the match as United's Premier League title defense got off to an impressive start.

Van Persie opened the scoring with an acrobatic strike in the 34th minute. He controlled a deflected, looping pass from Ryan Giggs before volleying past Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal. Welbeck scored his first of the game two minutes later, tapping in Antonio Valencia's drilled cross from close range.

Van Persie eventually got the third, his second of the game on 74 minutes, cutting inside on his favored left foot and curling a powerful shot beyond Vorm and into the top corner from outside the penalty box.

Bony managed to get a goal 10 minutes from the end with a neat first-time strike on the edge of the area before Welbeck completed the scoring, receiving a through ball from Rooney and lifting the ball over Vorm and into the far corner of the net with a sublime chip.

And Welbeck drew praise from teammate van Persie for his skillful finish after the game.
''The fourth goal from Welbeck was unbelievable,'' van Persie said. ''We're very happy, you don't want to lose the first game of the season and they are very hard to play against.''

Arsenal loses opener against Villa
Christian Benteke scored twice Saturday as Aston Villa stunned Arsenal 3-1 at Emirates Stadium in their Premier League opener to increase the pressure on manager Arsene Wenger to spend big in the waning days of the transfer market.

Arsenal had a perfect start when Olivier Giroud scored in the sixth minute, tapping in a pinpoint cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from close range.

But it turned into a miserable afternoon for Arsenal after that, as the Gunners ended up leaving the field to boos from its frustrated fans - having also seen two defenders get injured and another sent off to further deplete its already fragile backline.

Sturridge gives Liverpool opening win
Striker Daniel Sturridge got Liverpool's season off to a great start in a 1-0 win against Stoke but it was new goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who was the hero with a late penalty save.

Sturridge had only trained for two weeks having been sidelined by an ankle injury sustained at the end of last season on England duty, but if he felt rusty he did not show it.
