A day after the authorities said the dengue situation is showing signs of improvement, a fifth death this year has been reported.
A 52-year-old Chinese male, who lived at Corporation Walk in the Boon Lay/Taman Jurong area, succumbed to the virus yesterday, according to a joint statement by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).
He had sought medical help at Jurong Polyclinic on June 29 after having a fever for two days. He returned to the polyclinic six days later as he was still having a fever.
The man was then referred by the polyclinic to the National University Hospital emergency department and was admitted to the intensive care unit on the same day, where he was diagnosed with dengue shock syndrome.
Although his condition “improved transiently after dialysis and supportive therapy”, he remained critically ill with low blood counts, the statement said. His condition deteriorated after he developed pneumonia with septic shock on Sunday. He died yesterday.
