Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) said in an email dated February 7 this year, NEA informed it
that "the Hawkers' Association will make the necessary arrangements with
their contractors on the scaffolding erection / dismantling during the
spring cleaning period from 4-8 March 2013."
It added
that the hawkers' association had also approached its cleaning
contractor, ATL Maintenance Pte Ltd. The town council was not privy to
any discussions between the hawkers' association and ATL.
It
said it had taken NEA's email in good faith and left the scaffolding
arrangements in the hands of NEA and the hawkers' association.
The
statement from AHPETC came after comments from the National Environment
Agency that has said that it has received feedback that AHPETC did not
intend to clean areas above 2.5 metres at another hawker centre at Block
630 Bedok Reservoir Road.
AHPETC said it is concerned with inaccuracies contained in the releases from National Environment Agency (NEA) over the last few days on the cleaning of two hawker centres under its jurisdiction.
It said to ease the anxiety of the hawkers and the public, it is releasing its tentative schedule for the annual cleaning of five hawker centres under its care.
Those at Block 105 Hougang Ave 1, Block 538 Bedok North Ave 3, and Block 630 Bedok Reservoir Road are scheduled to annual cleaning in the last week of October 2013.
The two centres at Block 209 Hougang Street 21 and Block 511 Bedok North Street 3 are due for annual cleaning in the last week of November 2013.
AHPETC said at these annual cleanings, it will bear all cost related to cleaning the high areas, including all necessary scaffolding and canvas costs.
