Authorities working to reinforce positive road safety practices while stepping up enforcement.
The next time you get pulled over by the Traffic Police (TP), it may be for a ticket of a different sort. The TP are working with sponsors and partners to issue petrol vouchers to motorists who display good road behaviour.
Another option being studied is to increase current insurance discounts given to motorists who have maintained a clean driving record.
The TP and the Singapore Road Safety Council will be launching the National Road Safety Award later this year. A TP spokesperson said they are “currently working with sponsors and stakeholders” on these initiatives and more details will be released later.
To that end, enforcement efforts against speeding heavy vehicles will be stepped up. Despite laws requiring the installation of speed limiters for heavy vehicles above a certain weight class, some 2,400 heavy vehicles were caught for speeding last year.
To address this, heavy vehicles caught speeding will be required to undergo additional speed limiter checks. Heavy vehicles under 10 years old caught speeding, for example, will have to undergo two additional speed limiter checks within a year, which is beyond the Land Transport Authority’s annual vehicular inspection requirement.
