Tollyjoy Baby Products has voluntarily pulled its cotton wool — meant for use with infants — off the shelves after a customer discovered thin metallic objects in it.
Ms Isabel Fernandez, 40, was wiping down her five-month-old son with Tollyjoy’s cotton wool — a product she had used several times — when he suddenly screamed.
Upon closer examination, she found a thin piece of metal about 2cm long in the cotton wool. She found four more pieces of roughly the same length in the packet.
The metal strip left long scratches on her son’s abdomen, although the wounds were not deep, she said.
“Imagine the damage I could have caused to my five-month-old baby if I had used it on his face or eyes,” she added.
Tollyjoy said it immediately recalled the product last Thursday after being informed of the incident. It has also sent the affected batch for additional metal detection tests, with results so far indicating “there are no problems”.
“Nevertheless, the company views the matter seriously and will continue to strengthen its quality inspections on the product jointly with its third-party contract manufacturers to ensure that the product meets and/or exceeds consumers’ expectations,” the company said.
It has also apologised to Ms Fernandez and offered to replace her purchase — the cotton wool costs S$4 — with products of similar value.
