The Subordinate Courts announced today (May 21) that judges in the Subordinate Courts will wear robes when presiding over open court hearings from Thursday (May 23).
The new rule will not apply to chamber hearings.
The use of the robe is the “first of many initiatives in the pipeline”, the media release said.
The Honourable Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said at the Opening of the Legal Year 2013 on Jan 4 that one of the changes to enhance the standing of the Subordinate Courts could be for their judges to wear robes for hearings in open court.
The Subordinate Courts added that the practice is consistent with that in other jurisdictions where judges in the first instance courts, like the superior courts, also wear robes.
