A Russian national accused of threatening to blow up a Singapore Airlines plane was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal after the prosecution withdrew the charge Thursday.

No reasons were offered but Deputy Public Prosecutor Clement Yong said 26-year-old Vlada Vitaly had been issued a stern police warning.

At an earlier hearing on April 22, Vitaly had claimed trial as he said he had merely told his friend seated next to him he might vomit if he did not get the water he had asked for.

He said the Russian word "vomit" sounds like "blow up", and this may have created a misunderstanding.

The tax consultant was on a the flight from Moscow to Singapore on April 16, when he allegedly told a flight steward: "You better get back to me. If not, I will blast this aircraft."

He was arrested when the plane landed here and charged with committing criminal intimidation against flight steward Isaac Joseph Pragasam, 25.

It was the Russian's first visit to Singapore.
