Every life counts – that is the message grassroots leaders in Canberra hope to spread to all road users for the constituency's first road safety campaign.

The event was launched at Endeavour Primary School on Monday morning.

Thong Cheng Han, a Primary Five student from Endeavour Primary, commented: “In the early morning, it's also rush hour for adults who need to go to work, and as such, some people are also late for school, so they tend to dash across the road. I feel that we should raise awareness for these people.”

Some 3,000 car decals with safety messages will be given out to residents throughout the month. Also, 2,000 reflective bicycle decals will be given to cyclists.

Students also received badges and bookmarks, which have messages to remind them to stay safe at all times.

There are also new mid-block bicycle crossings in the estate and a traffic camera at the junction of Sembawang Drive and Admiralty Link.

MP for Nee Soon GRC, K Shanmugam, said: “There are heavy vehicles, but in addition there have been some accidents and also Lim Wee Kiak, other MPs have been pushing for safety cameras because whether or not there are accidents, safety cameras help because motorists automatically slow down.”
