Singapore saw 56,778 new business start-ups in 2012, according to the Singapore Department of Statistics -- and the number's been growing every year: 55,812 in 2011, 53,776 in 2010, and 53,290 in 2009.
On top of doing business, more entrepreneurs are also doing it for a social cause.
Pau-wer is one start-up fighting for a prize at this year's Start-Up@Singapore, the country's biggest entrepreneurship competition. The company's cause is a social one.
Mohd Shahri Samsi, founder of Pau-wer, said: "Pau-wer is all about helping ex-offenders regain their dignity in life. Other than that, I'm helping single parents, handicapped, and lower educated people find a job, and pay them a market rate salary."
Other start-ups in the competition feature a household appliance (WasteToFuel) that can turn food waste into fertiliser, and a walking frame (Glydesafe) for the elderly that glides, and does not require any lifting.
