As Singapore and its population mature, people would have higher expectations and a need for more private housing types.
Two thirds of the workforce are expected to be PMETs in 2030, up from half currently, according to the Government's Population White Paper released in January.
Speaking at an STProperty workshop yesterday, Dr Chua said PMETs are "more well-read, more well-travelled and more discerning consumers".
And it is likely that their rising aspirations and demand for more diverse forms of private housing would put pressure on developers to make such homes available, he said.
He added that the different housing types could include cluster homes, more lifestyle concepts and different housing designs. Cluster homes are landed houses with shared facilities.
Dr Chua also said that public housing in Singapore is already "quite varied", but added that "the definition (of public housing) might change" to meet the needs of young people.
Dr Chua also pointed out that "with low population growth, housing stock growth could exceed population needs".
