Dressed in a dark T-shirt and blue shorts, the man crawled out from behind the building to the open-air carpark, leaving a long trail of blood.
The man in his 30s had been attacked by three men in their 20s..
The police said that the man suffered multiple slash wounds on his head and body. He was taken to the hospital.
The incident occurred within the HighPoint Community Services Association compound at about 5pm on Thursday.
The victim was seen by security guard, Mr Nathan, walking into the compound, which also houses a thrift shop, a car service shop, a badminton hall, a seafood restaurant, a clinic and the Youth With A Mission hostel.
Not long after, the three youths followed him in.
"They were very well-dressed and neat, with long pants and shoes, so I did not think they were here to make trouble," said Mr Nathan.
"The victim was sitting near the kerb, when these three youths approached him.
"They then walked into the hostel together.
After the four men went in, Mr Nathan said that he was not aware of what happened afterwards.
He noticed that after about 10 minutes, the three youths left the compound, walking out of the gate as if nothing had happened.
Mr Nathan only realised something was amiss when the bloodied man crawled into view of his post near the gate.
"When I later realised there had been a fight, I quickly called the police and ambulance."
Mr Nathan said that after crawling into view, the victim shouted for help in Mandarin and then made a call on his mobile phone.
Evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that he called his mother, exclaiming: "Mum, I've just been slashed in Geylang!"
Mr Nathan said that he alerted a doctor from the clinic at the premises, who rushed out to help the victim before the ambulance arrived.
A reporter from Lianhe Wanbao was with the doctor and tried to hold the victim's head off the ground.
A bloody cutter was later found at the scene.
A police spokesman said they received a call at 5.30pm. The victim was conscious when he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
