Nine of the participants of the Merlion Park protest on May 8 have been warned, and their work and visit passes in Singapore are being reviewed, announced the Police today (May 10).
The protesters had gathered dressed in black on May 8 at the park near One Fullerton holding placards with messages about the Malaysia elections.
The demonstration was timed to coincide with a massive rally in Kuala Lumpur organised by the Malaysian opposition in protest of the what they allege to be fraud-marred results of the country’s May 5 general election.
The Police have also said that that the employers of the nine are being informed of the situation, and that further investigations are ongoing.
More by SPF:
The Police have issued conditional warnings against nine persons for actively participating in the illegal gathering at Merlion Park on 8 May 2013. Their work and visit passes in Singapore are being reviewed by the authorities. Their employers will be informed of this. Further investigations are ongoing.
We would like to reiterate that foreigners are allowed to work or live here, but they have to abide by our laws. They should not import their domestic issues from their countries into Singapore and conduct activities which can disturb public order, as there can be groups with opposing views. Those who break the law will be seriously dealt with. This may include termination of their work passes and visas.
