On 10 January 2012, Phillip Lim Chee Shong, 33, was reportedly upset after a domestic squabble.

He was sending a friend home to Southaven condominium at Upper Bukit Timah Road when he noticed the Volvo XC90 in the basement carpark, TODAY newspaper reported.

He saw that the car keys were left on the driver’s armrest and decided to park his own vehicle, a Proton, at the carpark and drove off in the SUV.

The ride lasted six hours as he drove all the way back to his hometown in Ipoh.

Along the way, Lim threw away two child car seats and documents that were in the SUV.

While in Malaysia, he continued to use the vehicle, worth S$76,000, until he got into an accident a month later. He then sent the vehicle for repairs at a workshop there.

In the same month, Lim decided to return to Singapore by bus to get his own car from the condominium.

It is not clear how Lim was arrested, but a police report was made for the stolen vehicle by the victim, TODAY reported.

Channel NewsAsia reported that Phillip Lim Chee Shong now has to serve 14 months in prison. The Malaysian is also banned from driving for 18 months.
