Singapore heads to space by building up its space satellite industry with the setting up of the Office for Space Technology and Industry (OSTIn).

The office is set up under the Economic Development Board (EDB) and will feature the collaborative efforts of six other government agencies such as the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

This new office will facilitate cooperation between different stakeholders so as to jumpstart and develop Singapore’s embryonic satellite industry. Businesses looking to expand into the space or satellite industry will be able to look to the office for funding.

In a bid to promote local research projects and talents, the office will start off by lending support to two research and development projects by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS).

NTU is working on a 100kg environmental monitoring satellite that will help to generate valuable data for institutions such as the National Environmental Agency and the Earth Observatory of Singapore.

On the other hand, NUS is working on the development of a commercial hyper-spectral imager for 50kg satellites.

It has the potential to revolutionise the industry through the deployment of cheaper and smaller cameras with a performance that is comparable to the larger and more expensive models in the market today.
