Two men, ages 33 and 35, were apprehended on Monday for suspected involvement in theft onboard a flight from Medan to Singapore.

A cabin crew member first noticed one of the suspects retrieving a bag from the overhead compartment and rummaging through its contents.

When passengers were disembarking the aircraft at Changi Airport, the crew member checked with the suspect about the ownership of the bag.

Later on, the victim realised that money was missing from his bag. That was when the police were notified.

Airport police acted swiftly and caught the two suspects even though they had already disembarked.

When a search was conducted, the money that was missing was found on them.

The police said in a statement that there have been at least six reported cases of theft from overhead luggage compartments onboard aircraft since Jan 21.

So far, eight Chinese males have been arrested in connection with these crimes. The offences were committed on regional flights to Singapore, said the police.

The two suspects were charged in court on Wednesday. They could face a jail term of up to three years, or be fined.
