A man was caught on security camera just seconds before shooting a New York taxi driver three times.

The hooded man jumped into the back of a cab in the Bronx area of New York in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

He then pulled out a gun and threatened driver Raphael Martinez, 54, in his cab at around 5.10am, but the driver did not understand his demands.

Mr Martinez was just starting his early morning shift when the incident happened, FoxNews.com reported.

Mr Julian Martinez, the driver's brother, gave a statement to the New York Post describing the interaction between the two men: "My brother was saying, 'Wait! I don't understand you!' and he just started shooting."

"(The gunman) didn't give him time. He just shot him and hit him twice in the shoulder. Then, when my brother got out, he shot him on the ground in the stomach."

The cabby had only US$8(S$10) on him at the time of the attempted robbery.

The attacker was described by police as a black male, possibly in his 20s, and wearing a tan jacket and a dark hoodie, FoxNews.com reported.

Despite his injuries, the driver survived.

He is in a stable condition and recovering at a Bronx hospital, reports said.
