WOMAN WHO DID NOT NAME ALL THE MRT STATIONS, PHEW: Saw Phaik Hwa, 57, stepped down as SMRT’s CEO in January, giving up what must be one of the strangest perks of being the boss of a transport operator – being carried around in a sedan chair by shirtless young men. She then started a blog in March called ‘isaw-isphy’. iknow-itishorriblynamed.
WOMAN IN THE HOT SEAT: Angry woman (pictured in a white dress holding a clutch) gets into a shouting match with an elderly woman on board a bus, forcing the bus driver to stop and act as a referee. The older woman ticked off the younger one for taking the priority seat on the bus. After an eternity of posturing and screeching from the younger woman, her supremely-patient fellow passengers finally urge the bus driver to “Jalan, lah, jalan (go, go) Don’t care.”
WOMAN IN THE HOT SEAT II: A middle-aged woman (seated) is not happy. And starts yelling at the young woman who had apparently given up the priority seat on the train for her. Anger management, anyone?
RELAK, WOMAN, RELAK: Amy Cheong, who worked with the labour movement’s membership arm, made it known with an online posting that she didn’t appreciate weddings at void decks. Don’t worry, Amy. The wedding is over and you can go back to what you were doing... in Perth.
MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR MEDICINE WOMAN: Dr Susan Lim was fined S$10,000, suspended from practice for three years and censured by the Singapore Medical Council for professional misconduct involving a S$25 million bill to one of her patients, the late sister of the Brunei queen. “Study hard and become a doctor” is sound advice after all. Lim is appealing the council’s decision.
A WOMAN’S FUTURE IN LAW: Recent law graduate Darinne Ko allegedly had sex with Associate Professor Tey Tsun Hang for better grades. Quite a scandalous notion. And even more eyebrow-raising – a law student told Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao that Ko only got a ‘B’ for the module that Tey taught.
WOMAN WHO LIKES BOYS: A former teacher, 32, was jailed a year for having sex with her 15-year-old male student. And he’s not even a graduate yet. How times have changed. (Teacher and student cannot be identified by court order.) In case you were born in a different time, the 1967 classic film ‘The Graduate’ (above) tells the tale of a young university graduate who has an affair with an older woman. The relationship did not end well.
WOMAN BEHIND THE NIGHTINGALE NIGHTMARE: Director of Nightingale Nursing Home Tan Choo Waoh was fined S$12,000 for making her employees work long hours and not paying them for overtime work. The home was also fined S$11,000 for manpower offences and S$15,000 for mistreating an elderly resident. Nightingale staff members had been caught on camera slapping the 77-year-old woman and tossing her onto the bed in a rough manner.
WOMAN MADE A SP-ECIAL WITNESS: A spiffy dresser with a talent for spelling, Cecilia Sue gets top billing as the biggest draw at the Subordinate Courts this year. There was never a dull moment when she was in the building. The middle-aged men and seniors who wake up early to get seats in court can vouch for that.
WOMAN WHO WAS INVOLVED WITH THE MAN WHO DID NOT PEN 'POLITICAL SUICIDE': Laura Ong, 33, has been identified as the woman who was having an affair with former Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer. Now, like many others on these lists, she’s off the grid. See also: Men in the News 2012
