Residents of Taman Muda in Kuala Lumpur, who are worried about the increase in crime cases in their area, have been given a reprieve as police will despatch personnel to patrol the area.

The Ampang Jaya police base yesterday launched 34 new Kawasaki Ninja 250 (STD) X motorcycles for patrols to reduce crime in the district.

Half of the high-powered machines will be used in Taman Muda, a favourite haunt for snatch thieves, while the remaining will serve Bandar Baru Ampang and Pandan Indah.

Ampang Jaya deputy police chief Superiendent Md Nazri Zawawi said four teams on the motorcycles would make eight-hour rounds daily.

"I hope residents will give cooperation to the policemen. These personnel will mingle with the people to get information, to better combat crime in the area."

Maria Darwan, 37, a snatch-theft victim, said the sight of policemen on big bikes would give residents a sense of security.

The mother of one said she was confronted by two men on a motorcycle who snatched her gold chain while she was sending her daughter to a kindergarten.

She said her neighbour had also been a victim of snatch theft and suffered injuries when she tried to fight off the attackers.
