A first-of-its-kind index is being developed by the Asia Competitiveness Institute to monitor a company's productivity, efficiency and manpower management.

The index will allow small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to track and measure their productivity in a more systematic and comprehensive way.

A thousand SMEs will be involved in the project. Via its 100 indicators, the index will point out weaknesses and problems in SMEs and help them improve their productivity.

Improving the efficiency of SMEs has been identified by analysts as key to achieving the national target of 2- to 3-per-cent productivity growth over the next decade.
