A lack of spots for medical interns at hospitals has led students to protest in Sydney's Taylor Square.

The low number of internship spots has been blamed on the high number of international students studying medicine in Australia.

However, the federal government has offered to fund A$10 million ($12.62m) for hospital intern places on the condition that the Australian states also provide funding, an offer that the Australian states have not been willing to accept.

The protest, "Scrubs in the Street" saw students performing tasks like washing windows, holding signs, giving out flyers, to signify the fact that they won't be able to become doctors based on the current projected internship shortfall, reported the Medical Observer.

The students were spotted with signs that read "Every minute we spend out here is another minute you wait in the ED" and "Keep Australian-Trained Doctors in Australia".

Singaporean students have also joined in the protest, according to a report on Stomp.
